Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description
A gold color metal and enamel device 29/32 inch (2.30 cm) in height overall consisting of the lower part of a gold disc with a black ring enclosing a light blue hub and on gold rays extending from the hub, a wavy three-pronged black device between outer rays bearing five light blue rectangles respectively.  At the top on a gold scroll arched above the hub, looped at the sides and inscribed ASK - WE DO in black letters.

Symbolism
The central hub and radiant segments denote the units support mission and capability for providing a nucleus of personnel for operation of centralized supply and stock control activity.  The blue billets suggest requisitions received and processed and reports pertaining to supply data.  The black wavy lines allude to the organizations supervision of petroleum supply companies.  The wheel also stands for movement of all supplies by transportation companies within the Battalions purview.  Gold and blue denote the units origin as a Quartermaster Battalion.  The two groups of five billets and the three prongs allude to the numerical designation of the unit.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 553d Supply and Service Battalion on 28 June 1967.  It was redesignated for the 553d Support Battalion with the description and symbolism revised on 30 July 1993.

Gules, a six-spoked wheel Or, charged at honor point with a hub Azure involved of the second all upon a pellet, the center vertical spokes being charged with three pellets wavy Sable conjoined at hub and remaining spokes charged with five billets tow, one and two blue.

Buff (yellow) and scarlet are the colors associated with Support organizations.  The hub of the wheel symbolizes the Battalions personnel as the nucleus of centralized supply and stock control of operations.  The radiating spokes denote the control of the incoming supplies and dispersal of outgoing stores.  The blue billets suggest received and processed requisitions and data supply reports.  The black wavy lines allude to the units supervision of petroleum supply companies.  The wheel also stands for the movement of all supplies by transportation companies within the Battalions purview.
